TNT Aims to Maintain Momentum, Ginebra Eyes a Comeback
After securing a strong victory in Game 1 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals, the TNT Tropang Giga are determined to extend their lead in the best-of-seven series. Meanwhile, the Barangay Ginebra Kings, stung by their opening loss, are eager to bounce back and even the series.
The pivotal Game 2 is set to take place at the MOA Arena on Sunday at 7:30 p.m., where both teams will battle for dominance. TNT import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and avoiding mental lapses to sustain their advantage.
“We got Game 1, and now it’s about focusing on the next game, being better, and not letting our lead slip away,” Hollis-Jefferson stated.
A Clash of Mentalities
Both teams possess a strong competitive spirit. Ginebra is known for its “never-say-die” attitude, but TNT is equally committed to fighting until the final buzzer. Hollis-Jefferson acknowledged Ginebra’s resilience but assured fans that TNT shares the same mindset.
“We want to win every game and compete at the highest level. If we were in their position, we’d be fighting back just as hard,” he added.
Ginebra’s veteran coach Tim Cone acknowledged the disappointing start but remained focused on moving forward. “It’s not what we wanted, but we’ll deal with it and regroup,” Cone remarked, signaling their intent to adjust and retaliate in Game 2.
TNT’s Dominant Performance in Game 1
The opening game, initially expected to be a tight contest, turned into a commanding performance by TNT. Hollis-Jefferson spearheaded the charge with an impressive near triple-double, scoring 34 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, and dishing out eight assists.
TNT’s outside shooting was a significant factor, converting 14 of their 37 three-point attempts, a stark contrast to Ginebra’s struggling 7-of-28 performance from beyond the arc. RR Pogoy led the long-range assault with five three-pointers, while Calvin Oftana, Kelly Williams, Rey Nambatac, and Glenn Khobuntin added two each. Their shooting prowess compensated for the absence of ace playmaker Jayson Castro.
Stifling Defense Fuels TNT’s Success
Beyond their offensive firepower, TNT’s defensive tenacity played a crucial role in their victory. They held Ginebra to just 89 points—15 points below their average from the elimination and semifinal rounds.
The Tropang Giga’s relentless energy and composure allowed them to sustain their early lead and secure a comfortable win. Their combination of sharpshooting and disciplined defense sets the stage for a promising run toward a back-to-back championship in PBA Season 49.
The Road Ahead
As Game 2 approaches, all eyes will be on Ginebra’s ability to make the necessary adjustments. The Kings need to find answers on both ends of the floor to prevent TNT from running away with the series.
