TNT Tropang Giga has been on an inspiring run in the 2024–2025 PBA Philippine Cup, defying odds despite being plagued by injuries and a thin lineup. Now, as they prepare for their game against the struggling NorthPort Batang Pier, the Tropa are poised to climb the standings even higher—possibly earning a key player reinforcement in the process.
Strong Momentum Despite Manpower Problems
With a four-game winning streak under their belt, TNT looks to extend its run and improve their record to 5-3. This would place them firmly in the top half of the standings—a significant achievement considering their limited roster depth. Their next challenge is against NorthPort, a team currently in disarray with six consecutive losses and major roster changes.
The Batang Pier recently traded away promising forward William Navarro to Magnolia in exchange for Calvin Abueva, Jerick Balanza, and a future second-round draft pick. However, it’s uncertain whether the new acquisitions can make an immediate impact, making this a winnable matchup for TNT.
Potential Boost: Mikey Williams Trade in the Works
TNT may also be on the verge of a major roster upgrade. A proposed trade has been submitted to the PBA involving star guard Mikey Williams’ rights in exchange for Converge’s sharpshooter Jordan Heading. If approved and once Heading receives medical clearance (he’s currently nursing back spasms), his arrival could fill the void left by injured playmakers Jayson Castro and Rey Nambatac.
Heading’s potential addition brings hope to the Tropa’s backcourt, adding firepower and stability. While the PBA has yet to finalize the deal, the Tropa are continuing to grind with the players they have.
Coach Chot Reyes: “Make Do With the Cards We’re Dealt”
After TNT’s recent 111–103 win over Rain or Shine on May 21, head coach Chot Reyes shared his team’s mentality amid adversity.
“Our approach is just to make sure to get better every game and to do that we have to make sure we get good practices,” said Reyes.
Reyes emphasized that with a shorthanded roster, the team must rely on cohesion and effort to compensate for its lack of depth.
“We don’t have the depth and the talent of other teams, so we have to be connected. That’s the only way we can compete.”
He added that the team is focused on embracing their current situation rather than dwelling on what they lack.
Key Upcoming Matchups: Ginebra and Magnolia Loom Large
While the NorthPort and Blackwater games are crucial stepping stones, TNT’s real tests lie ahead. Their schedule toughens with matchups against perennial contenders Barangay Ginebra on June 8 and Magnolia on June 13.
These games will likely determine how far the Tropa can go in this conference—and how long they can maintain their winning streak.
Coach Reyes remains realistic yet optimistic:
“We’ll take this as long as we can. But you know, we’re facing the heavier half of our schedule now, these next few games, so we’re not thinking about that.”
Resilience and Teamwork Driving TNT’s Success
Despite being undermanned, TNT has shown what resilience and strategic preparation can do in a competitive league like the PBA. The team has leaned on its chemistry, veteran leadership, and the tactical acumen of Coach Reyes to defy expectations.
Their recent surge is proof that even without superstars or a full lineup, a well-prepared and unified team can succeed. And with a possible trade upgrade on the horizon, TNT may have more reasons to be optimistic.
Can TNT Keep the Streak Alive?
With momentum on their side and the possibility of roster reinforcement, TNT Tropang Giga is in a unique position to push deeper into the Philippine Cup playoffs. The next few games will test their grit and resolve, but if recent performances are any indication, fans have plenty to be hopeful for.
Whether or not the Mikey Williams-Jordan Heading trade goes through, one thing is certain: TNT isn’t backing down.
