Strong Defense Gives TNT the Edge
TNT Tropang Giga showcased their defensive prowess to secure an 88-84 victory over Rain or Shine in Game 1 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals. Head coach Chot Reyes emphasized that the series would be a tough battle, recognizing the strength and versatility of the Elasto Painters.
Key Defensive Stand Helps Overcome Offensive Struggles
Despite the absence of top scorer Calvin Oftana due to Gilas Pilipinas duties, TNT managed to contain Rain or Shine’s high-scoring offense. Reyes admitted that without Oftana, their offense suffered, but their strong defense compensated, holding their opponents below 90 points.
Rain or Shine’s Late-Game Collapse
The Elasto Painters struggled in crunch time, managing only three free throws in the final six minutes while missing all 11 of their field-goal attempts. Turnovers also proved costly, with Rain or Shine committing 22 overall.
Hollis-Jefferson’s Tough Night and TNT’s Balanced Attack
TNT’s import, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, had a rough shooting night, making just 8-of-27 attempts. However, he contributed in other areas with 23 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks. His struggles allowed Jayson Castro and Calvin Oftana to step up, combining for 46 points and 12 three-pointers.
Rain or Shine’s Game 2 Adjustments
Rain or Shine’s import Deon Thompson led with 29 points and 16 rebounds but struggled against TNT’s aggressive defense, committing seven turnovers. Adrian Nocum provided a solid double-double, but the team will need additional contributions from Jhonard Clarito, Santi Santillan, and Andrei Caracut in Game 2.
What’s Next?
As the series moves to PhilSports Arena for Game 2, TNT looks to maintain their defensive dominance, while Rain or Shine aims to bounce back and even the series. The battle continues at 7:30 PM on Friday.
