The NLEX Road Warriors are off to a promising start in the 2024 PBA Philippine Cup, notching consecutive victories against teams just getting their bearings. But as they prepare to face the rejuvenated Blackwater Bossing in the league’s first-ever game at the Ynares Center in Montalban, Rizal, head coach Jong Uichico knows a sterner challenge awaits.

A Fortunate Start?

NLEX’s current 2-1 record includes wins over Rain or Shine and TNT—both teams playing their first games of the tournament. While these early victories are valuable, Uichico remains grounded.

“First game ng Rain or Shine, first game ng TNT, that’s also a factor,” Uichico said, pointing out the edge of playing opponents who hadn’t yet found their rhythm. “Pero ganito rin ang laro namin so it works both ways.”

Still, the Road Warriors looked sharp, especially in their 91-74 win over TNT. Uichico is pleased with the team’s early form but stresses the need for consistency moving forward. “I’m happy with how we are playing. Consistency is the key next and to keep on improving, because after this one, hindi na first game ‘yung mga kalaban namin.”

Blackwater Finds Its Groove

Unlike NLEX, Blackwater struggled out of the gate, dropping its first two games by an average of 26.5 points. But the Bossing roared back to life in their third outing, delivering a stunning 120-98 rout of NorthPort.

Head coach Jeffrey Cariaso credited the team’s resurgence to collective effort and improved bench production. “Everyone stepped up and played well regardless if they’re starting or coming off the bench,” he said. That translated into a commanding 60-29 advantage in bench points and a conference-high 24 assists.

Cariaso’s emphasis on accountability and readiness is clearly resonating with his squad. “You have to understand that you are needed and you’re reliable,” he told his players. “That was my challenge to them today.”

Road Warriors Stay the Course

Despite facing a rejuvenated opponent, NLEX remains confident thanks to a strong internal culture. Uichico highlighted the team’s dedication to extra work both before and after practice—an effort he believes is paying dividends on the court.

“Maganda ipinapakita as a team and I think we are in that process na unti-unti makakadating tayo doon,” said Uichico, suggesting that the squad is steadily progressing toward peak form.

Key contributors like Robert Bolick, Javee Mocon, and Anthony Semerad are expected to continue anchoring the team, while rookies Xyrus Torres and JB Bahio have impressed early with their poise and production.

Battle of Depth and Discipline

The upcoming match will be a litmus test for both teams. For Blackwater, stars like Sedrick Barefield and Christian David are expected to lead the charge, supported by high-energy performers like RK Ilagan and Mike Ayonayon. On the NLEX side, the balanced scoring attack and disciplined execution will be crucial if they hope to neutralize Blackwater’s momentum.

As the PBA stages its inaugural game in Rodriguez, Rizal—nestled at the foot of the Sierra Madre—the stakes are as symbolic as they are competitive. NLEX is aiming to build on its early momentum, while Blackwater is eager to prove its revival is no fluke.

One thing is certain: with both squads eyeing consistency and improvement, Friday’s clash promises to be more than just a historic venue—it could mark a turning point for either team.
