A Winning Streak Doesn’t Guarantee Comfort

Despite NLEX riding high on a four-game winning streak, head coach Jong Uichico remains grounded and wary as his team prepares to face Terrafirma Dyip in the PBA Philippine Cup at Ninoy Aquino Stadium. Although Terrafirma has been struggling with a 1-5 record, Uichico refuses to take the match lightly.

“Lately napagtatalo sila, but that does not mean they don’t play hard,” Uichico said. “They always play hard, they try their best.”

Terrafirma’s Desperation as Motivation

With their current record putting them on the verge of elimination from the quarterfinals race, the Dyip have everything to fight for. Uichico acknowledged that desperation can be a powerful motivator, and he’s not expecting an easy win.

“Just because they’re low in the standings doesn’t mean they won’t show up. It’s never been their mindset to give up,” he explained. “They will always fight.”

NLEX’s Turnaround and Key Contributors

After a conference-opening loss to San Miguel Beer, NLEX found its rhythm and compiled a series of hard-earned victories, the latest being a tight 89-86 win over Barangay Ginebra. Leading the charge has been team captain Robert Bolick, who has consistently delivered on both ends of the floor.

Also turning heads are rookies Xyrus Torres and JB Bahio, who have stepped up in crucial moments, earning extended minutes and showing promise for the future.

“We’re asking these young players to go beyond expectations. That’s why we’re giving them as much playing time,” Uichico noted. “We’re also looking at the future, but for now, we still rely on our veterans in crunch time.”

Terrafirma’s Young Guns Make Them a Dangerous Underdog

Drawing a comparison between his own young players and those on Terrafirma’s roster, Uichico pointed out the shared hunger and desire to prove themselves. He believes this attitude makes the Dyip a dangerous opponent, regardless of their record.

“They have players who are gutom, young, and gigil. They’ll always play hard regardless of the score or opponent. Even their veterans have pride and something to prove.”

Injuries Won’t Hold Back Bolick and Ramirez

Despite suffering a right quad injury on May 2, Bolick is expected to suit up and lead the Road Warriors once again after his 28-point outing against Ginebra. Brandon Ramirez, who dislocated his jaw during the same game, is also anticipated to play through his injury.

While NLEX enters the matchup as the clear favorite, Coach Jong Uichico’s cautious mindset reflects a deep respect for Terrafirma’s fight and resilience. The Road Warriors may be on a roll, but their coach knows that in the PBA, no win is guaranteed—and every team, no matter their record, has something to prove.
