Strong Start for Ginebra After a Long Break
Despite being separated for over two weeks due to national team commitments, Barangay Ginebra Kings showed no signs of rust as they secured a dominant 115-93 victory over the NorthPort Batang Pier in Game 1 of their PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinal series at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Third-Quarter Breakaway Secures the Win
After holding a slim 56-51 halftime lead, Ginebra exploded in the third quarter with a massive 32-14 run, spearheaded by Justin Brownlee, Troy Rosario, Jamie Malonzo, Scottie Thompson, and Japeth Aguilar. This offensive surge pushed the lead to 88-65 entering the final quarter, allowing coach Tim Cone to rest his core players as the reserves closed out the game.
Key Players Step Up for Ginebra
Justin Brownlee led Ginebra with 19 points.
Troy Rosario had an impressive all-around performance, contributing 16 points and 8 rebounds.
RJ Abarrientos added 15 points, helping to maintain the team’s offensive rhythm.
Jamie Malonzo, Scottie Thompson, and Japeth Aguilar played key roles on both ends of the floor.
Defensive Adjustments Shut Down NorthPort
Ginebra’s second-half defensive adjustments proved crucial, as they effectively neutralized NorthPort’s perimeter shooting. Despite Kadeem Jack’s 33-point effort, NorthPort struggled offensively, with Arvin Tolentino—a Best Player of the Conference contender—limited to just eight points. Joshua Munzon was the only other NorthPort player in double figures with 10 points.
Coach Cone Stays Grounded Despite Big Win
Although Ginebra’s dominant victory is a big confidence boost, coach Tim Cone remained cautious, emphasizing that it’s just one win in a long series. However, the team’s performance—despite limited training due to national team duties—signals that they are in top form for the remainder of the semifinals.
Looking Ahead
With momentum on their side, Ginebra will aim to carry their strong performance into Game 2, while NorthPort looks to regroup and respond after a tough loss.
