Gilas Pilipinas Set for Final Window of Qualifiers

Gilas Pilipinas continues its impressive run in the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, entering the third and final window with a perfect 4-0 record in Group B. Already securing their spot in the Asia Cup, the team now seeks to reaffirm its dominance over Chinese Taipei when they face off on Thursday, February 20, at the Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium.

Previous Encounter: A One-Sided Victory

In their first matchup back in February 2024, Gilas Pilipinas crushed Chinese Taipei with a 106-53 win. Justin Brownlee and Kai Sotto spearheaded the team’s dominance, delivering all-around performances that overwhelmed their opponents from start to finish.

Key Players and Lineup Adjustments

This time, Gilas will be missing Kai Sotto, who is sidelined due to an ACL injury. However, Brownlee is expected to continue leading the charge alongside Dwight Ramos and veteran June Mar Fajardo. Additionally, AJ Edu returns after missing the first four games due to injuries, providing much-needed support in the frontcourt.

Chinese Taipei Reinforces Lineup for Crucial Matchup

Chinese Taipei, currently third in Group B with a 1-3 record, is expected to put up a stronger fight as they aim to keep their Asia Cup hopes alive. The team has bolstered its roster with two key additions:

  • Brandon Gilbeck (7-foot naturalized center) – A dominant presence in the paint, averaging 11.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 6 blocks per game in the second window.
  • Mohammad Al Bachir Gadiaga (high-scoring guard) – Leading Chinese Taipei with 16 points per game in the second window while playing for the Akita Northern Happinets in the B. League.

Both Gilbeck and Gadiaga were absent in their first encounter against Gilas, making this upcoming rematch a more competitive battle.
