PBA GAMES MAY 28: CONVERGE VS TERRAFIRMA

As the PBA Philippine Cup eliminations draw closer to a conclusion, the Converge FiberXers are set to face the Terrafirma Dyip in a crucial matchup at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig. Slated for 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, this game could potentially secure a playoff berth for Converge, provided they walk away with a victory.

Must-Win Situation for Converge

A win would boost Converge’s record to 6-4, likely enough to guarantee at least a play-in spot for the last seat in the quarterfinals. With only one more game remaining in their elimination round schedule—against powerhouse San Miguel Beer on June 11—securing this win takes on added importance.

On the other end, Terrafirma is all but eliminated from playoff contention after suffering a seven-game losing streak, putting them at 1-7. Despite their slim chances, Converge head coach Franco Atienza remains cautious and is taking no chances.

No Room for Complacency

Coach Atienza made it clear that his team is not underestimating Terrafirma.

“We are preparing for the best Terrafirma could offer. We know na medyo mababa sila sa standings, but they still have the materials,” said Atienza. “Hindi kami magpapakompiyansa.”

He added that the team is taking their preparations seriously, emphasizing focus and concentration in the lead-up to the game.

“Alam namin na hindi magiging madaling game iyon. Kaya talagang locked in kami.”

Learning from Recent Defeats

Recent losses to Barangay Ginebra and NLEX have given Converge plenty to think about. Those teams successfully limited the impact of Converge’s dynamic frontcourt duo—Justin Arana and Justine Baltazar—by employing a “rebounding by committee” approach and playing a fast-paced game. Both Arana and Baltazar usually contribute a combined 30+ points and 24 rebounds per game.

“Napaghahandaan na ang dalawang Justin,” said Atienza. “It’s like our strength is becoming our Achilles heel.”

He stressed the need to diversify the team’s strategy so they don’t rely too heavily on their star big men, especially now that opponents have started to figure out effective countermeasures.

Terrafirma’s Potential to Upset

While Terrafirma has struggled this season, they are not without talent. Players like Louie Sangalang, Keith Zaldivar, Kevin Ferrer, and Aldrech Ramos have shown the ability to compete. If they can hold their ground against Arana and Baltazar, the Dyip could pull off a surprise upset.

Atienza acknowledged this, emphasizing the importance of not looking too far ahead.

“Hindi muna namin iniisip [San Miguel]. Pagkatapos ng Terrafirma saka namin iisipin iyon,” he said. “Kasi capable pa rin iyan, and anytime kaya nilang tumalo ng kahit anong team.”

Focus and Execution Key for Converge

With the playoff picture still uncertain, Converge understands the gravity of this game. They must not only capitalize on their core strengths but also be adaptable, especially now that teams are starting to unravel their usual game plan.

The FiberXers are poised to take a big step toward postseason qualification, but they know it won’t come easy. Against a Terrafirma squad eager to salvage pride and disrupt the standings, Converge must stay focused, flexible, and relentless from start to finish.
