Mitchell’s Return: A Game Changer?

After nursing a back injury, Akil Mitchell is set to return for Meralco Bolts in their crucial quarterfinal clash against Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. However, questions remain about his game readiness as he steps back onto the court.

Meralco’s Struggles Without Mitchell

With Mitchell sidelined, the Bolts struggled in their last two elimination round games, losing to Ginebra (87-91) and Magnolia (92-129). Their troubles continued in the EASL, suffering a heavy 71-89 defeat against the Ryukyu Golden Kings. Despite an earlier 7-3 record with Mitchell, Meralco’s late slip cost them a potential Top Two finish.

Ginebra’s Edge and Winning Streak

Ginebra, led by Justin Brownlee, has dominated Meralco this season, boasting a perfect 4-0 record, including a 3-0 sweep in the Governors’ Cup quarterfinals. The Kings enter the playoffs on a two-game winning streak, crushing Rain or Shine (120-92) and edging out Meralco (91-87).

Coach Tim Cone’s Strategy

Despite their recent win over Meralco, Ginebra coach Tim Cone remains cautious. He used the last game to give his second and third-string players more minutes, ensuring roster depth for the playoffs while protecting his core players from injuries.

A Fierce Battle Awaits

With Mitchell’s return, Meralco hopes to turn the tide against their playoff rivals. Ginebra, however, remains a formidable opponent, setting the stage for an intense best-of-three series.
