The NLEX Road Warriors showcased a potent mix of grit, youthful energy, and timely fortune as they overwhelmed the TNT Tropang Giga, 91-74, in their Philippine Cup matchup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday. It was a decisive win that marked their second straight victory and moved them to a 2-1 record in the standings.

A Breakout Game for Bahio and Balanced Support

Rookie John Bryle Bahio stood out with a career-best performance, posting a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. His relentless hustle and presence on the glass set the tone early for the Road Warriors. Alongside him, fellow rookie Xyrus Torres and veteran Robert Bolick also chipped in 13 points apiece, providing a balanced scoring punch that TNT failed to counter.

Bahio credited his performance to hard work and trust from the coaching staff.

“Ibinibigay ko lang best ko. Di ko sinasayang ‘yung opportunity na binibigay ni coach Jong,” said Bahio. “I give a hundred percent every game.”

Momentum Shifts in NLEX’s Favor

The turning point of the match came in the second quarter when NLEX began pulling away. The third quarter saw the Road Warriors completely take over, building an insurmountable 91-69 lead before coasting to victory. This followed their 109-95 rout of Rain or Shine before the Holy Week break, signaling the team’s growing cohesion.

Head coach Jong Uichico emphasized the importance of having young legs energizing the team while pushing veterans to stay competitive.

“We need young players to give the energy even while the veterans are out… It also challenges the veterans to play as hard as the young ones,” he explained.

TNT’s Championship Hangover

While NLEX’s energy was undeniable, Uichico was candid in acknowledging another factor that tipped the scales — TNT’s short recovery time after their Commissioner’s Cup title run, which wrapped up on March 28. With limited practice time, the Tropang Giga appeared rusty and out of sync.

“May kasabihan nga… hangover sa championship. Medyo nangangapa pa sila. So timing lang din talaga kami,” said Uichico.

Despite showing flashes of their usual system, TNT lacked the sharpness and intensity that carried them to their recent championship. Only Roger Pogoy (12 points) and Kelly Williams (11 points) managed to break into double figures, highlighting their offensive struggles.

Hustle Stats Seal the Deal

NLEX’s hustle played a key role in their win. While they missed 11 free throws, they more than compensated by grabbing 18 offensive rebounds, which translated to a stunning 17-0 edge in second-chance points. Javee Mocon, Enoch Valdez, and Brandon Ramirez each contributed at least 10 points and five boards, rounding out a total team effort.

Looking Ahead

For TNT, the focus now shifts to recovery and adjustment as they prepare to face Converge on Sunday. As for NLEX, the early signs are promising. With their young core rising to the occasion and the veterans rising to the challenge, the Road Warriors seem poised for a competitive Philippine Cup campaign.
