A Statement Victory
Terrafirma Dyip made a strong and symbolic statement in what is expected to be their final PBA season by defeating Phoenix Super LPG, 95-87, in the opening game of the 2024 PBA Philippine Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. With rumors of the franchise’s impending sale continuing to swirl, the Dyip played with a clear sense of purpose—determined to leave the league with their heads held high.
Explosive Start and Key Contributors
The Dyip came out of the gates firing. Louie Sangalang ignited their early momentum, dropping 10 of his 21 points in the first quarter, setting the tone for what would be a dominant performance. His efforts helped build the foundation for the offensive push that followed in the second and third quarters.
Veteran guards Stanley Pringle and Terrence Romeo then took over the scoring responsibilities. Pringle finished with 17 points, including nine in the second quarter, leading a critical turnaround as Terrafirma recovered from a 28-36 deficit to grab a 49-43 lead by halftime. Romeo, meanwhile, scored all 17 of his points in the second half, including a momentum-capping three-pointer that extended the lead to 92-79 with just under three minutes left.
Terrafirma’s Best Showing in Recent Memory
The win was a refreshing break from past struggles. It equaled Terrafirma’s win total from the entire previous conference and gave head coach Raymond Tiongco just his second win in the PBA. Tiongco praised his players’ discipline and defensive commitment, noting how their hard work during the break between conferences paid off.
“Actually, committed sila lahat sa defense namin. We did good. May mga lapses, pero nakapag-adjust naman,” said Tiongco postgame.
His sentiments were reflected in the team’s hustle on both ends of the floor. The Dyip forced Phoenix into 22 turnovers and held the Fuel Masters to a woeful 3-of-23 shooting from beyond the arc, showcasing a much-improved defensive effort.
Phoenix Falters Despite Ballungay’s Big Night
On the other side, Phoenix Super LPG suffered their fourth consecutive first-game loss in a conference despite a spectacular individual performance from Kai Ballungay, who led all scorers with 30 points and 15 rebounds. Unfortunately, he got little support from the rest of the team.
With key player Jason Perkins sidelined due to injury, only Raul Soyud managed to score in double digits (11 points). The lack of offensive firepower and careless ball-handling plagued Phoenix all night, stifling any chance of a comeback.
Momentum into the Future?
Although Terrafirma’s PBA future remains uncertain, their performance suggests they won’t go quietly. With veterans stepping up, young talents contributing, and a renewed focus on defense and teamwork, the Dyip seem determined to make the most of what could be their farewell tour.
Whether or not this marks the beginning of a turnaround or simply a final push remains to be seen—but for now, Terrafirma has served notice that it’s not going down without a fight.
